‘Carry the Load’ memorial walk passes through Hampton Roads

It’s an annual relay that honors the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.

NORFOLK, Va. — Wisconsin paramedic Steve Hensley was walking down the busy streets of Norfolk Wednesday.

He’s part of a nationwide relay called Carry the Load, honoring fallen first responders and military members.

“When I was younger, I worked in the fire service out west,” said Hensley. “I lost five friends in a helicopter crash. There were three of us who had not been on the aircraft at the time. In 2011, one of the other survivors of it had taken their life. In 2014, the other survivor had taken his life.”

Walkers, cyclists mark true meaning of Memorial Day

BYRON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — The gray sky and an occasional pelting from a cold rain didn't slow down Travis Swaim and Brandon Asberry as they biked their way up Byron Center Avenue on their way to Grandville Wednesday afternoon.

They were on a mission.

"It can be miserable at times out here. You're not always having the best time. But you kind of step back and remember why you're out here," Swaim said.

"It always comes back to why you're here. You never forget why you're here," Asberry added.

That "why" is to honor the sacrifices made by military members and first responders.

‘Carry the Load’ walking across country to honor veterans, military members and first responders

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- All across the country, people are embarking on an 11,500 mile trek for "Carry the Load."

It's all to honor the sacrifices of our nation's military, veterans and first responders.

"Carry the Load" started in 2011 by two Navy SEALs who felt like the true meaning of Memorial Day was overshadowed by cookouts, sales and celebrations. They started an event in Dallas that has spread to 40 states, reminding people of the day's true meaning."

Non-profit holds Hampton Roads walk event to honor veterans, first responders

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - Hundreds of people will be walking for a good cause. It’s called Carry the Load and participants will be walking to honor the sacrifices of the military veterans and first responders.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue Station 9 is where walkers will be meeting Wednesday morning at 8 a.m.

Carry the Load is a non-profit organization which connects Americans across the country to the sacrifices made every day by the military and first responders.

Military supporters, first responders walking 3,900 miles to restore real meaning of Memorial Day

A group of military supporters and first responders are paying tribute to the real meaning of Memorial Day by walking 3,900 miles.

"There's something more to Memorial Day than just having a Monday off," Dallas firefighter Brandon Ashberry said.

That's why Ashberry is on a mission.
