September 17, 20199/11 remembrance around the area OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — September 11th is a day that will live in infamy around the United States forever. Here in the metro, some area events are helping to remember those who lost their lives on that tragic day. The Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Cemetery Administration, are partnering with Carry the Load – an organization dedicated to honoring Military heroes – are hosting a Day of Service. Locally, the Omaha National Cemetery is asking for volunteers to help clean up the cemetery grounds and clean headstones of fallen service members. The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The Omaha Fire Department is holding a minute long moment of silence to remember 9/11 victims. Every fire station in the city will pull their fire apparatus out and have their emergency lights activated. This minute of silence happens at 9:11 a.m. The First Responders foundation will be hosting a luncheon to support and remember first responders at 11:30 a.m. Chuck Hagel will be the keynote speaker. In Bellevue, a ceremony honoring fallen and wounded warriors, current members of the military, and first responders will take place at 6:00 p.m. at American Heroes Park. Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be flown at half staff today.
