Alwyn C. Cashe

Fallen Hero’s Hometown and State: Winter Park , FL
Branch of Service: United States Army
Rank: SFC
Sergeant First Class Alyn Cashe’s Bradley was struck by an IED. While soaked in fuel, Cashe rushed to the back of the vehicle, reaching into the hot flames and started pulling out his soldiers. The flames gripped his fuel soaked uniform.
Flames quickly spread all over his body. Despite the terrible pain and the threat from enemy small arms fire, Sergeant Cashe placed the injured soldier on the ground and returned to the burning vehicle to retrieve another burning soldier; all the while, he was still on fire. He didn’t stop for aid until all his soldiers were evacuated.
Alyn Cashe was a soldier’s soldier. He was great to talk with, and drew respect from everyone around him. He is the highest example of living the Army’s values. He was a true leader, and inspired greatness in his soldiers. On November 10, 2020, the United States Congress voted to upgrade Cashe’s initially awarded Silver Star to the Medal of Honor.
