Corporal Humberto “Bert” Sanchez served in the U.S. Marine Corps with honor. During the 2021 evacuation in Kabul, he helped screen evacuees at Abbey Gate. He was killed in a suicide bombing while aiding others, giving his life in service to the mission and to those seeking safety.

Bert was known for his quiet strength, humility, and devotion to others. Whether in school, sports, or service, he gave his all. In Kabul, he stayed at his post to help children and families, showing the same compassion and courage he lived by every day.

Corporal Sanchez’s sacrifice is remembered in his hometown and across the nation. An AMVETS post in Logansport bears his name. His family gives scholarships each year through the Corporal Humberto Sanchez Memorial Scholarship and also launched the Corporal Humberto Sanchez Memorial Foundation this year to continue his legacy.
