Lance Corporal Sammy F. Monroe served as a rifleman in Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Division, III MAF. Sammy was shot in the fierce battle on December 20, 1966 in the Quang Nam Province, South Vietnam. He eventually died from his wounds at the Charleston Naval Hospital in South Carolina. He was a good kid.
