Carry the Load National Relay makes a stop in Lafayette

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) – Carry the Load’s National Relay stopped at the American Legion Post 11 in Lafayette Saturday afternoon. The relay is a nationwide movement honoring fallen military and first responders.

Anyone wanting to honor someone they’ve lost in the line of duty can join the movement. Carry the Load is a non-profit that first started as a Memorial Day march in 2011. It takes place every year, starting at the beginning of May.

It now has five bus routes that span 20,000 miles across 48 states. Today stops were made at the American Legion, Purdue Village Administration Building and West Lafayette Fire Station 3. Members trade off walking to each destination. The relay also includes community events at each town they stop in.

Members said their work is to restore the true meaning of Memorial Day.

“We’ll have different exchange points where the two gentlemen carrying the flag will hand off to two other people carrying the flag. We think it’s important to keep names relevant, their legacy and make sure that their sacrifices weren’t made in vain,” said member Bert Walton.

Walton is a veteran. He became a member to honor a fellow friend he served in combat with.

The movement will conclude at the Dallas Memorial March on Memorial Day weekend.
