North Texans honor 21st anniversary of 9/11 terror attacks through service

A weekend of commemorations here in North Texas will honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks and first responders. For many, it is an opportunity to give public service or to connect with younger people who were born after the attacks.

The event, which was organized by Carry The Load, brought together people directly impacted by 9/11 and others who want to show they care.

"I remember exactly where I was that day as those events unfolded. That lit a fire in me and countless others," Navy veteran Cody Bandars recalled.

Dayton National Cemetery honors fallen 9/11 first responders

(DAYTON) People here in the Miami Valley are giving back to remember the fallen first responders. Dozens of volunteers showed up to the cemetery to honor the men and women buried in VA National Cemeteries by cleaning headstones of the fallen and beautifying sacred grounds.

“It’s a day that veterans and their supporters can pull together so for camaraderie, for service, for physical activity,” said Bernie Huelsman, VP of Marketing at Chase Bank. “So it’s a way for those veterans to get together to share their experiences to contribute to the cemeteries in the memories of other veterans.”

The VA National Cemetery Association partnered with Carry the Load to host the event that recognized the 3,000 lives lost and the more than 6,000 who were hurt in the four coordinated attacks.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Brandt McCartney is a recent TCU business school grad whose world changed forever almost exactly 18 months ago. But instead of miring himself in the overwhelming grief that comes with losing a mentor and hero, he is honoring his older brother by keeping others from possibly losing theirs.

"The way I deal with grief is through honoring my brother," the 22-year-old said at the TCU football stadium earlier this week. His brother Matt Brewer, 10 years his senior, took his own life February of last year.

DALLAS — That fact that Hershel "Woody" Williams received the honor to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda is remarkable in and of itself.

The history of Carry The Load and its Memorial Day mission

DALLAS — Eleven years ago, two Navy Seals from Dallas came up with what they thought would be a good 'Dallas' idea: a solemn procession of the American names and faces lost in our nation's wars to remind us all what Memorial Day is really about.

"I've lost many, many friends in the wars, probably too many to name here. But I carry all of them, every day," said Marcus Capone of Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions.  "And we're just humbled and happy to be part of something so great."

"I'll be here until I can't walk," said Dallas firefighter/paramedic Beau York. "This is just something everybody should do at least once. And once you do it once you can't stop doing it. Just like me."
