AUSTIN, Texas — A month-long journey from Seattle, Washington to Texas is quite a road trip.

But for Smitty Searles and his fellow volunteers, it's one taken in stride.

"We are honored to be in Austin, Texas at Zilker Park," said Searles.

Searles, a paramedic from Wisconsin, is part of Carry the Load.

Carrying the Load of Military and Veterans on Memorial Day

People make sacrifices to ensure freedom. Ron Russell is leading the effort to remember them.

WESTFIELD, Ind.--You'll have a chance to show your support for people who have been in the military and have made sacrifices Monday in Westfield. At 5 a.m. in Quaker Park, Ron Russell will put on a backpack loaded with sand and brick, and walk 22 miles.

"The 22 stands for that on the average there are 22 veterans that commit suicide," he said. Russell is leading the Carry the Load Indy walk for the third time. It's part of a national walk that honors veterans.

After emotional tribute in Shreveport, Carry the Load moves to Texarkana on Thursday

SHREVEPORT, La. - Men, women and children spent their Wednesday afternoon paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Carry the Load, a cross country moving memorial for our men and women who died for our country, made its way through Shreveport this week with hundreds walking in support of our fallen troops.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Just days before Memorial Day weekend, members of a national nonprofit stopped in Shreveport to remind people of the holiday’s true meaning

Members of Carry the Load’s East Coast relay team joined with local veterans Wednesday to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The relay team’s members have been on the road for 23 days, having started in West Point, N.Y.

Their journey is planned to end Sunday in Dallas.

On Wednesday, they worked their way down to Overton Brooks VA Medical Center.

The team also stopped at the Kelsall & Reeves Monument in Riverview Park and the Shreveport Fire Department before beginning their march toward Dallas via Hope, Ark., and Texarkana.

Carry the Load campaign passes through Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. 3,900 miles over 32 days, that’s how far a group honoring fallen first responders and veterans is carrying an American flag.

The Carry the Load campaign started its journey in Minneapolis and will end with a rally in Dallas on Memorial Day.

Wednesday, the flag and the group passed through Lincoln.

A group of supporters and veterans continue to carry the flag and the memories of those lost during their time on the front lines.

Two non-profit organizations are assuring veterans and first responders are remembered

TOPEKA (WIBW)--- Two non-profit organizations are working to ensure the sacrifices of veterans and first responders will not go unrecognized this Memorial Day.

The Kansas chapter of Sheep Dog Impact Assistance teamed up with Carry the Load for this years Midwest Relay.

Carry the Load will travel across the country this month, as an active way to connect Americans to the sacrifices of military, veterans and first responders.

The 25 participants walked 11 miles Thursday starting at Topeka Fire Station #2 and ending at Mission Township Fire.

Organizers explained the walk's significance.

"So on the back of my backpack are names of some of my cop friends that I have lost in the line of duty, some military personnel that were killed in action over in Afghanistan," Vice Pres., Sheep Dog Impact Assistant Kacey Wiltz said. "So what A am doing is carrying the load for those individuals that are not here to do so. Personally I'm police officer myself and I know the burden of we care for just doing the job, so I want to make sure the individuals whose name are on my back know that I got them and I got their six."

This years Carry the Load relay will end in Dallas with a Memorial Day celebration.

Flag Relay highlights the true meaning of Memorial Day

OMAHA, Neb (WOWT) Remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day and honoring our fallen heroes.

That's why a ceremony at the Omaha National Cemetery today is so important.

Members of an organization called Carry the Load are biking and walking from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Dallas, Texas handing off the American flag at each veteran's cemetery along the route.

 - Carry The Load is a non-profit that provides an active way to connect Americans to the sacrifices made by military, veterans and first responders.

The organization's relay team is on a journey across the country and you can join them in Austin.

The team is hitting up different cities and meeting people to walk with them while carrying/honoring someone who died in the line of duty and to raise awareness on restoring the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Organizers say they want all Americans to participate in honoring the sacrifices made by our nation's heroes.
