But then again, there is nothing typical about Carry The Load, which culminated over a month of rallies in cities across the country with the Dallas Memorial March on Sunday.

True Meaning of Memorial Day Isn’t a 3-Day Weekend
Last May, I trekked three and a half miles through New York City’s streets, lugging a 31-pound backpack. This was my Memorial Day tribute.


The weight on my shoulders symbolized the pain carried by families and loved ones of fallen military members. I carried photos of 30 men who never returned from war. The men and one military working dog were in a Chinook helicopter that was shot down by enemy forces in Wardak province, west of Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 6, 2011. I didn’t know these men personally, but I served in their unit. I served on active duty with the Navy.

Story & Impact of Carry The Load


May is the month we commemorate Memorial Day. Most people think of backyard barbecues, pool parties and days at the lake, but that is not what Memorial Day is all about. Six years ago, this national amnesia about what used to be called “Decoration Day” was too much for two battle-hardened Navy Seals, Stephen Holley and Clint Bruce.  Losing friends in combat was always on their minds, and seeing how most  Americans seemed to have forgotten the ultimate sacrifices they made, Holley and Bruce decided to do something about it.

Carry the Load comes through Rockwall
(HEATH, TX ) Join the Rockwall County First Responders Team at the Rockwall County Courthouse on May 28 to greet the National Carry the Load Relay Team as it comes through town on the way to the Dallas Memorial March at Reverchon Park. The National Relay Team is expected to arrive in Rockwall at 1 a.m.

(San Antonio, Tx) - The Carry the Load relay is traveling by bike and on foot from Seattle to Dallas for a Memorial Day rally.


The event in San Antonio, which is being held Wednesday, May 24, 2017, will be seen live on KENS5.com and during KENS 5 Eyewitness News at 4 and 5 p.m.
