Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. Sergeant Gibson died of wounds sustained in Balad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position during dismounted operations.

He was selfless and always cared for his people and their safety. Sergeant Gibson was selfless and courageous to the very end. He took the brunt of the blast and saved countless others with his brave act.
