On the Shoulders

  • Identify those who have sacrificed for them.
  • Explain what service, sacrifice, and patriotism are.
  • Understand the importance of their sacrifice that helped paved the way for them to learn, grow, and succeed.

Have board or construction paper with three columns with the words service, sacrifice, and patriotism.

Participants will identify words they think best describes service, sacrifice, and patriotism. The group will then pick three heroes either from their community or from the Storyboards provided.

Discuss what made these individuals heroes and what they think they sacrificed. Next, ask them to think about their future plans and how they might reach their own goals. Then ask the participants how the service, sacrifice, and patriotism of the heroes play a part in their ability to reach those goals.
