Thousands to ‘Carry the Load’ for Memorial Day

- This weekend, as many as 20,000 people are expected to take part in Carry The Load.

The event was launched by two Navy SEALs in Dallas in 2011. It has since become a Memorial Day tradition in North Texas.

Participants are encouraged to bring a memento to symbolize a personal load they may carry.

LANTANA, Texas — Looking back at pictures from 1998, Michael Carnell flipped through old photo albums.

"I was just a punk kid," he joked.

There were photos from when he joined the Marine Corps and was going through training. Years later, in 2004, he found himself in a war zone.

Sgt. Carnell spent five months in Iraq during some of the deadliest times.

Carry the Load stops in Central Texas with message for holiday weekend

FORT HOOD, Texas (KWTX) Carry the Load, a non-profit organization, is determined to remind Americans the importance of remembering those who paid the ultimate sacrifice this Memorial Day weekend.

Members from the West Coast made a stop Thursday afternoon for a rally on Fort Hood at the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment training area.

For the nine participants, their journey to Central Texas started on April 25 from Seattle, WA.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) -
 Veterans were honored in advance to Memorial Day at Fort McPherson National Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.

A new plaque was revealed that honors the fallen and their families.

The Department of Veteran Affairs and the National Cemetery Administration partnered with Carry the Load relay teams to provide a way to connect Americans to the sacrifices made by military service members and their families.

It was at the same time the relay team arrived in Eastern Nebraska, that the cemetery dedicated the "Tribute to the Fallen and their Families" plaque.

2 Buckhorn High students highlight non-profit in honor of Memorial Day

 

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - This Memorial Day, two students from Buckhorn High School are planning to do something meaningful.

They're headed to Texas to participate in a two-day event that pays respect to our fallen heroes.

WAFF-48 News Anchor Elizabeth Gentle spoke with both girls who say they're walking together to remember a father and a classmate.

But for Smitty Searles and his fellow volunteers, it's one taken in stride.

"We are honored to be in Austin, Texas at Zilker Park," said Searles.

Searles, a paramedic from Wisconsin, is part of Carry the Load.

Carrying the Load of Military and Veterans on Memorial Day

People make sacrifices to ensure freedom. Ron Russell is leading the effort to remember them.

WESTFIELD, Ind.--You'll have a chance to show your support for people who have been in the military and have made sacrifices Monday in Westfield. At 5 a.m. in Quaker Park, Ron Russell will put on a backpack loaded with sand and brick, and walk 22 miles.

"The 22 stands for that on the average there are 22 veterans that commit suicide," he said. Russell is leading the Carry the Load Indy walk for the third time. It's part of a national walk that honors veterans.

After emotional tribute in Shreveport, Carry the Load moves to Texarkana on Thursday

SHREVEPORT, La. - Men, women and children spent their Wednesday afternoon paying tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Carry the Load, a cross country moving memorial for our men and women who died for our country, made its way through Shreveport this week with hundreds walking in support of our fallen troops.

SHREVEPORT, La. (KSLA) - Just days before Memorial Day weekend, members of a national nonprofit stopped in Shreveport to remind people of the holiday’s true meaning

Members of Carry the Load’s East Coast relay team joined with local veterans Wednesday to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

The relay team’s members have been on the road for 23 days, having started in West Point, N.Y.

Their journey is planned to end Sunday in Dallas.

On Wednesday, they worked their way down to Overton Brooks VA Medical Center.

The team also stopped at the Kelsall & Reeves Monument in Riverview Park and the Shreveport Fire Department before beginning their march toward Dallas via Hope, Ark., and Texarkana.
